Health Exams
Health examinations by a veterinarian experienced in avian medicine are crucial to the continued good health of your bird, be it parakeet, macaw, or your backyard chicken. We offer new bird complete health exams, yearly check ups, short exams, emergency examinations and follow-up examinations to meet the specific health care needs of your unique bird.
A Full Health Examination involves a head to tail visual check of your bird. We examine eyes, ears (yes, birds have ears too!), nares, choanal slit, beak, feathers, wings, chest, abdomen, preen gland, legs, toes and tail. If it's possible to see it with the naked eye, we look at it during the Full Health Examination.

New Bird Examinations: Full Health Examination and we advise including a Fecal Cytology, Complete Blood Count (CBC), radiographs, vaccinations where appropriate and testing for diseases that your bird may be at risk for such as Psittacosis or Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease. You may also wish to include DNA sexing to discover whether your bird is a girl or a boy, or get a microchip for identification purposes.
Yearly Examinations: Full Health Examination and we advise including a Fecal Cytology and Complete Blood Count (CBC)
Short Examinations are recommended every 6 months for all birds.
Emergency Examinations are available during regular appointment hours for patients that need to be seen right away and cannot wait for a regular appointment. Some birds run into accidents in the home (like the family rottweiler or a door) and some birds are so adept at hiding illness that symptoms aren't apparent until the illness is well advanced. For the sake of their lives, they must be attended to immediately. Emergency examinations cost slightly more than other examinations, primarily because they require immediate resources to attend to and care must begin the moment they arrive at the clinic.
PreSurgical and Pre-Injection Evaluations are also available.
Diagnostics
Scientific diagnostics are an integral part of veterinary medicine. They provide information that cannot be gleaned accurately in any other manner.
The clinic offers the following diagnostics in-house:
- Idexx digital radiography (excellent tool due to unique anatomy of birds)
- Barium radiology
- Abaxis full panel blood chemistry

- Complete Blood Counts
- Endoscopy
- Fecal cytology (another excellent diagnostic tool due to the unique digestive tract of birds)
- Fecal floats
- Gram stains
- Abdominal taps
- Urinalysis
- Choanal cytology
- Crop flushes
- The Oregon State Poultry Test
- Ophthalmic staining
- Necropsy
We collect and send out samples to experienced and dependable outside laboratories with a proven track record for accuracy for:
- Disease testing (such as PBFD, polyoma and psittacosis)
- Cultures
- DNA testing
- histopathology needs.
Grooming
Is Polly cruising around the house with no regard for safety? Has Crackers been leaving marks on your arm from those toenails? Has that beak gotten a little bit long?
Much of our grooming services are available without the extra cost of an office call. We offer nail trims and filing, safe wing trims (allowing your bird to glide gently to the ground rather than crash) and beak trimming performed by Dr. Lintner. You may also request that our trained technicians perform your bird's wing and nail trims (sometimes this can get you in faster than a regular appointment).
For the bird that has gotten into something they shouldn't have, or just needs some extra attention we have full bathing (with a pleasant and safe blow dry) services.
We also offer band removal services during examinations. You can work closely with Dr. Lintner to determine any grooming needs your bird may have.
Traveling with your bird?
Need a health certificate for your upcoming airline travel? We offer state-to-state and International health certificates as well as USDA banding, microchipping, disease testing and quarantine to meet international travel requirements. We also offer assistance in completing the documentation needed for traveling with your feathered family member just about anywhere in the world.
Hospitalization: When Your Bird is Ill
Having a bird that is not feeling well can be a frightening and stressful experience for just about anyone. We pledge to offer your bird the highest quality care available, and keep you up-to-date on your bird's progress. If it is safely possible to do so, you are welcome to visit with your bird while they are hospitalized.
The clinic has over 15 AICU incubators (Animal Intensive Care Units)
in two different wards to meet the specialized care requirements that avian patients need (like extra heat, humidity and security). We do our best to make every hospital patient as comfortable as possible, providing pain relief when advisable. These AICU units allow us to closely control and monitor the temperature and humidity inside the unit. We also have oxygen ready to supply to birds in respiratory distress.
If your bird needs to be hospitalized, they will be housed securely in an appropriate sized AICU incubator and monitored closely.
Whatever treatments your bird may need are available including: oxygen, injections, oral medications, gavaging, intravenous fluids, subcutaneous fluids, hand feeding, ophthalmic treatment, medication administered via drinking water, specialized diets, social eating or topical treatments (just to name a few).
You will receive regular updates from our experienced technicians, in addition to one-on-one phone consults with Dr. Lintner, or in-person, while your bird is in the hospital with us. You are also welcome to call as often as you like to get the latest information! We are happy to talk to you about your bird's progress and to answer any questions you may have.

We will supply you with whatever we can, but be prepared to provide a carrier, cage, and accessories for your new companion.
