marli%20for%20web%20A.JPGMarli Lintner, DVM received her degree in Veterinary Medicine from Oregon State University in 1984.  She continues to work with upcoming graduates of OSU through their shadowing program.  She really enjoys teaching and it shows!  Dr. Lintner opened Oregon's first avian exclusive veterinary practice in the late 1980's and has been working in veterinary medicine exclusively with birds ever since (that's over 20 years!).  She has worked with parrots of almost every species, as well as poultry, ratites, raptors, waterfowl and avian wildlife.  Her avian veterinary experience is almost unparalleled in Oregon.  She has a great 'bedside' manner with people as well as patients, and explains complicated concepts in easy to understand terms.
She has been an active member of the Association of Avian Veterinarians for over 22 years, and attends the AAV International conference regularly.   Her presentation of the master level class entitled "The Diagnosis and Treatment of the Pet Chicken" at the dr%20and%20chicken_5420.jpg2006 Association of Avian Veterinarians conference in Texas was well received and well attended at both sessions.
A recipient of the Mamie Campbell Award, she has volunteered with The Audubon Society of Portland since 1986.  In addition to performing veterinary services courtesy, she served as a Board member for 8 years, and served as President for 2 years.
Dr. Lintner is also a member of the Oregon Emergency Response Team for Avian Disease.  The team has been preparing for a potential outbreak of Avian Influenza, and Dr. Linter is involved in the action.
Along with her family, Dr. Lintner lives with a Severe Macaw, a small flock of chickens, a cat, and two ponies.  They have added a new dog to the family just recently.  Chile, a Slender Billed Conure, also Dr. Lintner's, resides at the Avian Medical Center clinic.  Learn more about Dr. Lintner in an interview  here

rachel.JPG   Rachel Lamson has a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and is currently pursuing a Masters degree at Portland State University.  She has been with AMC since 1995 and has gotten to know clients and birds personally.  Her warm, friendly demeanor makes her a favorite among boarding birds and clients alike!  With over 17 years of experience in animal care and veterinary technician work, she has worked in Michigan as well as Oregon.  Rachel is also employed by the Washington State Fish and Wildlife Services as a scientific researcher, working with the Oregon Zoo in their Pygmy Rabbit Project and with their California Condor preservation project.  Best known for her scientific work with the Pgymy rabbits, she has been interviewed many times and has been called "The Rabbit Whisperer".  Her work with the rabbits is helping return the species to sustainable levels in the wild, and is nothing short of inspiring.  Rachel lives with several Zebra Finches, a budgie named "Aura", two very cute rabbits and just added the cutest pug in world to her family.  Read more about the Pygmy Rabbit Project at the Oregon Zoo by clicking herehere , or here

larger%20tamara%202007%20for%20website.jpgTamara has returned, joining us again in January of 2007!  After being in California since 2005, working as a veterinary technician, Tamara has come back to AMC as a technician and veterinary assistant.  Tamara has worked with professionally with animals since 2001. Her experience includes cats,tamara_chile%2010_2007%20_7722%20web.jpg dogs, exotics, fish and potbelly pigs!  Her passion is birds.  She has 8 birds at home, including a pionus, a white-eyed conure, several lovebirds and two budgies.  She also shares her home with two lovable dogs.  Tamara enjoys working with birds and people, and says that "birds add that little spark of sunlight and joy."  She says that being informed about your bird's diet is very important, each bird is an individual and may have different needs.  She also says it's vital to understand the signs of good health versus illness in birds.  Changes in habits, eating or posture could be an indication of illness.  Tamara has a strong background in customer service, with over ten years of experience in various roles.  She has also studied biology, art and business.  She loves art, with drawing, painting and watercolors topping her list.  Animals are her favorite subject, of course!  Here's a warm Welcome Back, Tamara!

kendra%202006_6113.jpg   Kendra Hellwege joined us at AMC in September 2005.  She had over 5 years experience in the animal care profession, including her work at The Oregon Humane Society as a skilled animal care technician.  She studied at Oregon State University, where she completed classes in Kendra%20Hellewege%20and%20Magoo%202006.jpganimal and wildlife science.  While at OSU, she received a scholarship for her exemplary academic performance and her work with animals.  She has extensive experience in customer service, and is also very talented in that area.  It's not just the animals that love Kendra, it's people too!  Kendra has fantastic skills in the area of organization and has helped the clinic continue to move forward in efficiency and standards of care.  We aren't the only ones impressed with her - Kendra received recognition from the Oregon Humane Society as their 2005 Capital Campaign Champion, no small feat!  Kendra always has a ready smile and with her quick thinking and excellent judgment, she is great to have in an emergency.  She shares her home with a black headed caique named "Pig Pig".  He is a very special bird and Kendra is teaching him quite a few new tricks, as well as verbal behaviors.  We are very happy to have Kendra on our team; clients adore her, birds ADORE her and so do we!

lisa_vincent%2011_07.jpgWe welcomed Lisa Ewing in March 2006 after she moved to Oregon from Virginia, where she worked as a veterinary technician. She quickly became a favorite of clients, staff and birds alike.  She has since been promoted to customer care as our new office manager!   She is totally gifted with people and birds, not to mention multi-tasking.  It is to our great benefit that she is working at the front desk! lisa%202007_6832.jpg Lisa also has a great eye for interior design, and a strong art talent.  She designs many of our displays here at the clinic, and has created artwork for some lucky clients.  Lisa holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Oklahoma State University (the other OSU!), with much of her studies in Animal Behavior.  Her senior thesis analyzed avian intelligence!  She is currently in the process of learning even more about bird behavior so that she can also offer help in our behavior services area, including individual consultations and classes.  Look forward Lisa teaching a Birdie 101 class here at the clinic later in 2008!    Lisa shares her home with a loving husband, two dogs, several beautiful finches in a variety of species and an eclectus.  Lisa found her first bird Vincent (a male Solomon Island Eclectus) when a fellow member of her aviculture society shared that she was hand feeding a variety of baby birds and was in desperate need of a computer.  She made the trade and hasn't looked back since!  "Vincent has brought me more joy than I ever imagined possible.  I can't envision what I would do without birds in my life.  I'm so glad to be working here!" So are we!

shauna%20martin%2010_2007_7550%20web.jpg Please join us in a warm welcome to Shauna Martin, who joined our staff in September 2007.   Shauna has earned TWO bachelors degrees  (one in Zoology and the other in Psychology) from the University of Washington.  Her previous experience with birds includes working with a zebra finch colony at the David Perkel lab at the University of Washington, and an internship at the Cougar Mountain Zoological Park where she worked shauna%20and%20spinelli%2010_2007_7592%20web.jpgexclusively with macaws and other parrot species.  Shauna has a sincere and enthusiastic nature that predisposes her to a special talent with parrots.  She won over a rather grumpy bird here at the clinic in only a few short days (we think they are in love!).  While she is currently working as an Animal Care Assistant with us, we expect that she will quickly move into the role of Veterinary Assistant due to her impressive learning ability and attention to detail.  We are also looking forward to Shauna joining our Behavior Team with her excellent background in psychology.  We are so happy that Shauna has joined our team, we know you will love her!

Kelly Ballance joined us in January 2005 and composite%20ml%20and%20kb_june%202006.jpgserves multiple roles here at the clinic.  She is our behavior and training consultant, as well as our practice manager.  She teaches bird behavior classes(focusing on positive reinforcement)  regularly at the clinic and is great help for clients with birdie behavior problems.   An entertaining speaker and educator, Kelly has worked with birds since 1999 when she began as an Animal Care Technician at the Oregon Humane Society.  Kelly holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography from the Pacific Northwest College of Art.  Most of the images on our website are her work and we also have her photographs in one of our exam rooms!  In 2006, her photograph of a toucan was published as the full back cover of Good Bird! Magazine.  Never done with learning, she has earned a certificate of excellence in Applied Behavior Analysis; Living and Learning with Parrots (with Susan G. Friedman, Ph.D), and a diploma in Humane Management from The Humane Society of the United States.  She attended the November 2005 ClickerExpo in Minneapolis.  In September she attendedkelly%20and%202_7326%20web.jpg (and had the amazing opportunity to teach at) the 2007 Veterinary Behavior Conference at The Gabriel Foundation in Colorado.  She has also earned a certificate of excellence in an advanced seminar on "Applied Behavioral Analysis and The Art of Training Birds", taught by Susan Friedman, Ph. D. and world famous animal trainer, Steve Martin outside of Orlando, Florida.  She has been a professional member of The International Association of Avian Trainers and Educators (IAATE).  She has studied Applied Behavior Analysis through the University of North Texas in their Graduate Certificate in Applied Behavior Analysis distance learning program and is currently reading The Manual of Parrot Behavior edited by Andrew Luescher.  If you are interested in learning more about bird behavior, please contact us at the clinic, and we can arrange a personal appointment with Kelly, or register you for one of the upcoming behavior classes.
