Every exam with Dr. Marli Lintner is informative.  From controversial concepts to common sense, Dr. Lintner is well versed in the means and methods for providing the highest quality care for her avian patients.

We caught up with her to get her most recent thoughts on birds, their care and the humans that provide it.

What are the three most important things a person can do for their birds?

Be observant.  Changes in birds are so subtle.  Catching things early is essential when caring for a pet bird.  Noticing a change in attitude, droppings or personality can make all the difference.

Diet.  The old cliche "You are what you eat" is exactly true.  Daily vegetables are more important than you think. Obesity is now starting to be an issue in avian health.  We need to feed our pet birds a good diet, appropriate for their species and specific situation.  Dark green vegetables, like broccoli are great to offer.  Encouraging your bird to enjoy them can help.

The old cliche "You are what you eat" is exactly true.

Exercise.  If it is at all safely possible, let your bird fly for at least a couple weeks every year.  Birds are designed from one end to the other for flight.  It's not just the cardiovascular system, but every other system as well.  From the kidneys, to the digestive tract, everything is meant to function in conjunction with flight.  Keeping them grounded can have some negative consequences.  I've found that it's safest for flight in the average home during the winter time.  The doors are closed, activity is lower than in the summer.  Summer is more of a challenge because of high family activity, open doors and windows.  I recommend a few weeks during October or November, with the wings being given a gentle clip (just the first few primary feathers) as soon as holiday decorations go up.

What do you enjoy most about working with people who love birds?

doc%20with%20huck%2012_2007.jpgMore than any other animal type I've worked with, bird owners are devoted to the well being of their pets.  Only people who have had birds know how unique they are, how great their personalities can be and why they make great pets for the right people.  Their devotion is heart warming.  Our clients will go to the ends of the earth to find the right diet, housing, or environmental enrichment for their pets.  It's inspiring.  I couldn't ask for a better group of people to work with!
